iris

Iris

Iris (also known as purple butterfly, blue butterfly, or black kite) has flower petals shaped like a kite with a tail. The name ‘iris’ also means ‘rainbow’ in Greek, and the Greeks took this name to represent the vivid colours of the flower. The goddess of rainbow in Greek mythology is the messenger of the gods and the mortals. Her main task was to bring good people back to heaven through the Rainbow Bridge. In ancient Egypt, iris represents ‘power’ and ‘eloquent’; while the Israeli widely believe yellow iris is a symbol of ‘gold’. Different colours of iris carry a different meaning: white for innocence; yellow for everlasting friendship, warm and cheerful; blue for elegance or secret admiration; purple for love and good fortune. Fragrant iris is the national flower of France; while Tennessee in the United States also has iris as its state flower.
